Adam Smasher Smashes His Way to Victory at the El Bar!

I was going to shorten this piece by guest ref J. Martin Hill a little bit, but since this is the first time someone else has written up the tournament recap I figured what the heck – Urbanus

A wave of new players gave Philly RPS veterans a run for their money at the El Bar on Monday night, where two fresh faces – Adam Smasher and Scissor Me Timbers –  battled their way through the league’s top ranks to reach the final match. After a flurry of ties and trash talk, Adam Smasher (unsure of to what degree Pitchblende would care for this player – Ed.) emerged the victor, taking three matches to one with a well-timed throw of scissors to cut Scissor Me Timbers’ paper. Smasher and fellow newcomers also turned the El Bar into a seedy den of street RPS tournament wagers, as each match seemed to have at least 10 street RPS dollars riding on the outcome. However, Philly RPS veterans steered clear of these activities, choosing a more traditional approach to winning street – buying specials.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’s Silly Putty, currently in third place in the league standings, gained some ground on the season point leads held by both her teammate Paper Tiger and RPS Speedwagon powerhouse Dick Nasty by reaching the semi-finals. Both Nasty and Tiger made quick exits in the first round. However, Dick Nasty’s teammate, The Mighty Grundle Gripper (in picture on right, at left), made up for his shortcomings by taking the street RPS prize of the night with 94 street dollars. The Neutral Finger also made it to the semi-finals to cap a combined RPS Speedwagon effort that racked up 14 12 team points on the night.

RPS Speedwagon’s sheer numbers and solid attendance rate are, once again, helping the team pull away from the flock. The Blackout Motherfuckers, who seemed to boast at least 100 team members at the start of the season, have seen their numbers dwindle over the last few weeks. Sweetji is the only member of the team with more than two events under her belt. While it’s still early in the season, keep in mind that you need at least five matches to be invited to the Philly RPS Championship Invitational and to have any shot of winning that coveted $1000 check.
