It was an all Spicy Brown (formerly known as the Paper Cut Posse) finals in April at Skinners. It came down to the Droog and I Don’t Want to Sound Queer or Nothing But Unicorns Are Kick Ass (formerly Fist of Iron – above having Pabst Blue Ribon chap stick applied by teammate Chinchilla Blue Ribbon). The final match looked like a blowout early when the Droog was looking like a roasted turkey, but he hammed it up and made it a little interesting in the middle, then it almost got very interesting as this game of chicken continued and the score almost got even in the late middle but instead IDWTSQONBUAKS said enough of this baloney and took the title in the end with a win that, in hindsight, was pretty easy cheesy.

Future champions please note: The Champ on the night used his winnings to buy a round of Jim Beam for his team and the ref. This is considered exceptionally good form by competitors, spectators, sponsors and refs alike.

Spicy Brown Autocrat Le_Tigre continued the team domination on the night and took the street prize with a literally paper-thin win over Friend of the Majestic 12 Jake Falkinburg by a score of 53-52. Hmmm. Off-season tourney at Skinners right before the season dominated by Spicy Brown…this kind of reminds me of something.

PJ Rhymeswithsausage of team David Bowie’s Package (above) won his 3rd tournament of the season after taking out Grim Trigger of the Majestic 12 by a score of 3 matches to 0. Grim Trigger was notably upset at the paparazzo on hand during the finals and that distraction may have played a part in him winning but one lonely point in the championship loss. There was also a strong showing by three players from Milwaukee (all made the final eight), as well as the Togo and Cameroon Peace Corps volunteers who ship out on Sunday. The PBRPRPSCLCS would be able to tell you more about them if the referee had not forgotten the score sheet at the venue. But don’t fear, the scores from last night for all regular players have been retained and updated by collective memory.

PJ Rhymeswithsausage also won the Street Prize on the night, making it the first time in 2008 there has been a clean sweep by one player in a night. He also beat Grim Trigger there by a count of 92-59. This has put PJ into the lead fr the Street prize with 1 event left tonight at the Dive in the 2008 season. By virtue of both victories on the night during Double Points Week, PJ Rhymeswithsausage claimed a mighty 20 points toward his season total, which has now pushed him past the Paper Tiger and into 2nd place behind Loomer on the season.

Don’t forget there is a minimum tournament requirement of 3 to qualify even as an alternate for the City League Championship this Saturday. Including tonight there are two more chances to satisfy this rule before the completion of the 2008 Pabst Blue Ribbon Philadelphia Rock Paper Scissors Championship Series.

Rookie player Monkey’s Paw (above, right) rolled into Skinners with Team Feed the Pony for the 100th tournament in City League history and to the shock of the veteran players on hand rolled out as the winner of the 100th tournament in City League history. He took down Travial Pursuit (now an official member of the Majestic 12) in a 3 match to 0 blowout in the finals, in which Travial Pursuit won only one throw in the series. Monkey’s Paw said after his win “I hope to build on this strong showing and qualify for the City League Championship on June 7th. I know it won’t be easy for me or the other players who still need a good deal of points to qualify, but if we play quite a bit this week and next (when there are 4 events instead of just 3) we should make it. Especially if, as I’ve heard rumored, the last week of the 2008 season is Double Points Week“.

El Toro Papaya (above, left) won another street title for the year and has momentarily moved into the lead for the season with a total of 281. This lead has been changing frequently and this particular prize probably won’t be decided for good until the last tournament of the season next Thursday which will only add to the excitement if, as rumored, the last week of the 2008 season is Double Points Week.

That’s right…there have been 2 tournaments added to the 2008 schedule. There will be no Memorial Day City League action at the Khyber next Monday, so that one will be moved to Wednesday, May 28th at Skinners (Market between 2nd and 3rd). There will also be 4 nights of RPS the last week of the season with another Skinners tourney on June 4.

The first Skinners match also will happen to be the 100th Pabst Blue Ribbon Philadelphia Rock Paper Scissors City League Event! This includes in-season, off-season and CL Championships. So thanks to all the players and sponsors who have made this possible, especially Pabst Blue Ribbon who has been the Title Sponsor every year. After a quick running of the numbers, it looks like your local ref has been a party to somewhere in the area of 1,835 matches over the past three years. This hopefully qualifies him for some sort of award from the World RPS Society and hopefully that award has a cash prize.

As you all know, your Commissioner is like a really nice guy. In an act that was almost a little too nice, as a reward to all those who attended the last off-season event before the 2008 Pabst Blue Ribbon Philadelphia Rock Paper Scissors City League Championship Series season begins, points were awarded that will count towards the 2008 totals. The 2008 standings tab has been adjusted to reflect this. *Note – This was only individual points and does not include team or street money accumulation.

Le Tigre (above left with delicious Pabst Blue Ribbon), representing the Paper Cuts, roared to the finals in his <strike>first</strike> second Philadelphia-area RPS appearance to face a dominating Fiberglass Forest (above, right), who was last seen in the final 16 of the 2006 PBRPRPSCLCS Championship, and was blowing people out at Skinners by winning in 4 straight throws in multiple matches. But Le Tigre turned the tables on her, chopping down FGF by a blowout count of 3 matches to 0 in the finals to claim the title on the night as well as $60.

Kite-Kate, also of the Paper Cuts, won the Street RPS prize on the night by more than doubling up on the reigning City League Champ Baconshark. This made it a clean sweep on the night (well, except for the whole 2nd place thing) for the Paper Cuts who plan to continue this domination once the 2008 PBRPRPSCLCS kicks off on April 14th.

Also noteworthy is that the first round saw a matchup of Dave, who is the marketing director for PBR in Philly Vs. Zac, who markets PBR in Boston. Dave defeated Zac easily. Proving what locals already knew, that Philadelphia is better than Boston or any other city when it comes to RPS. But PBR still rules no matter where you drink it.
