Looks like a guy somewhere in upstate New York has started a site about the etchings of cities that he does on Etch-A-Sketch machines. You can go check it out if you want (you should want) over here. The Philadelphia one is looking pretty good so far and there’s some nice work of other cities who aren’t good at RPS but have more robots, like Chicago. This is pretty impressive stuff as some of us don’t really have the attention span to set up off-season tournaments once a month, let alone put in the time this must take.

What you’re saying right now – what’s this got to do with RPS? Well, since everyone in upstate NY knows each other, it looks like this Bryan fellow is somehow associated with Robot Frank (above, silver, with Robot Ron), a robot who would make a fine, fine Philadelphian. One thing we here at PBRPRPSCLCS HQ are pretty sure about is that this etcherman is not Rock Star Bruce. It’s just not his style.

Reigning City League Champ Mr. Is (above, with below-average referee) checked in from the field after accidentally stumbling upon and purposefully cleaning up the competition and taking the title (and a chair that broke upon its’ first use) at a bush league event this past weekend in Ambler, PA. A description of the scene direct from the Champ herself and edited a tiny bit on this end:

———

50+ drunk lawyer-types and their brethren, decked out in standard issue Other Beer Lite RPS mardi gras beads. Amid a flurry of vertical paper, horizontal scissors, mandatory launchpads, and delayed throws, I was able to walk away victorious, bringing yet more pride and honor (and class) to the noble institution of the Package and PBRPRPSCLCS.

It was an easy night, where the boys all threw rock, the girls all threw scissors, and everyone played to beat the last throw. After 5 rounds where I faced nothing but dudes (all stunned to lose to a girl, much less a brunette), the final came down to me and another lass, the most “well-advantaged” (as we in DBP would say) RPS player I’ve come across. There was hooting and hollering from the crowd, but I suspect that it was
less for my cunning throws, and more for her ever-lower slipping shirt. I took home victory in a swift 3-1 final, proving my might with the most confident rock I’ve ever thrown. And my prize? A kiddie-sized patio chair. (Dear Other Beer Lite: Why do you make kiddie sized patio chairs??)

Conclusion: That other RPS league in the USA is for suckers. PBRPRPSCLCS rules!

———

That’s right Mr. Is, it’s for suckers and jerks (except for one of them). Disclaimer: The previous statement by the PBRPRPSCLCS does not include any of the players of any league when refering to ”suckers” and/or “jerks”.

Regardless of who is and who is not a sucker and/or jerk, congratulations to Champion Mr. Is on another grand tournament win this summer!

Just a month after the 2008 PBRPRPSCLCS wrapped up, and The Paper Cut Posse are already down 2 players heading into 2009. Gone are J. Martin Hill (who also ran the NJ RPS Championship in 2005 and 2006 and has competed in 3 World Championships) and Harper Lee, both formerly of the now-defunct Ernie Vanderbilt College of Games and Wagers, LLC.

They take their combined 2008 record of 12-23 (inc. CL Championships) with them down to Gaithersburg MD, which is Philadelphia’s long-standing RPS arch-nemisis after having taken the only two PBR RPS Keystone Classic titles back down South with them(Gaithersburg resident Martin Maier in 2005 and Megan Powers in 2006).

The PBRPRPSCLCS wish the best to J. Martin Hill and Harper Lee in their new surroundings, even if those surroundings are Gaithersburg, MD. Hopefully the new transplants will start up a tournament that players from Philadelphia will go in and win every year. Stupid Gaithersburg.

Anyway, maybe we’ll catch up with them both sometime in the forthcoming Where Are They Now section of the site.

Well it seems that there are still fans of the once mighty 3.5 Megabytes that rocked New Brunswick, NJ from 1998-2000 and then Montreal on and off from 2001-2003. Much to the surprise of the former band members, a MySpace page has popped up with the demo tape from 1998 that was recorded at Charlie’s house in Princeton the day after all the songs were originally and drunkenly written.

The songs are not safe for work, unless you work in a warehouse or maybe a RPS Administrative office. I think Robo Angst is the only one that would be OK for an office setting. Unfortunately, this is the oldest material and I’d say Naughty Computer is probably the best of the bunch since this recording predates the later hit Hot Lunch (let’s see how many hits the site gets for that).

If you have a MySpace profile then friend ‘em up (since there’s only, like, 9 at the moment). The keys to the page have been handed over to the band so it may undergo a major renovation soon, although that may take awhile. Don’t forget to make friends with the PBRPRPSCLCS while you’re over there.

Oh yeah, here’s a 3.5 article from Vice.

Mr. Strawberry, well known around Philadelphia RPS circles for consistantly placing 2nd, has been practicing all off-season down in Newark, Delaware and has already claimed a 1st place prize this summer! He’s been playing down at his local California Tortilla and after claiming many 2nd place prizes of Chips and Salsa (above) he has taken the gold, defeating his cashier for the top prize of a free burrito (above)!

Said 1st place finisher Mr. Strawberry “it’s too bad I can’t compete in the largest Rock Paper Scissors tournament ever, but at least I can still see Steve Miller and enjoy the lingering taste of my victory burrito.”

Mr. Strawberry hopes his strong play will continue in the mean streets of the Newark fast food industry throughout the summer with hopes of winning free sodas, pancakes, ribs and the ultimate goal of “someday soon I’ll win an entire pizza. Hold the strawberries. BAM!”.

Update: California Tortilla representatives – the PBRPRPSCLCS would be more than happy to discuss sponsorship opportunities for the 2009 City League season!
